Eyes on the Victor Ludorum

"The best kids are often those you wouldn't expect."

At the RowLeeds Indoor Champs, athletes accumulate points (and medals and prizes) for podium positions. There are also points for every young rower taking part and double points for relay placings. There will be a school team winner in March, and a school team winner in June, but the 2019/20 Victor Ludorum will be awarded to the school with the highest points accumulation across all three champs. We are excited to see who will take home this trophy. At the December Championship, The Ruth Gorse Academy Team A scored 97 points, giving them the December win. They are currently sitting 27 points ahead of The Morley Academy in the overall Victor Ludorum table.

We met The Gorse Boat Club rowing coach, Ciarán Longmore to hear more about his team's win in December and what he hopes to achieve throughout the rest of this academic year. And yes, it seems he has his eyes on the Victor Ludorum trophy for The Ruth Gorse Academy.

Were you happy with the results in December at both the Leeds and National Indoor Champs?

I'm content we won the RowLeeds Champs. I'll be happy when we have won a gold in every event. That is my disposition, I'll rarely be ecstatic with a result because you can always win by more.

I did enjoy BRIC. I think for the kids to compete alongside high performance athletes really motivates them when they return to training. Racing at an Olympic venue has the same effect.

What was the most enjoyable aspect of those events?

Winning! Why else do you compete?

I did also enjoy watching the 3 year 7 girls perform their dynamic warm up on the race floor. The 3 girls from 2 different schools completing the warm up in synchronicity.

What areas are you most looking to for improvements with your school?

Growing the numbers at our weekly indoor rowing club and providing conditioning for athletes who compete in other sports to make them better at rowing.

Who do you think will be your biggest challengers at the March Champs?

Ruth Gorse's second team (Team B), we've got strength in depth.

What advice would you give to other schools thinking about starting an indoor rowing programme?

Get every kid in the school doing a timed piece on the rowing machine. The best kids are often those you wouldn't expect.
